The word for eye in hebrew is עין which has the same letter as the word poor עני A possible lesson in the connection could be is that no matter the quality of your eyesight what you choose to see,to focus on determines whether or not your eyesight is truly poor.
Another lesson could be that unless what you see reflects the Divinity of your soul and not the negative trappings of your body your eyesight can be nothing but poor.
