To regret in hebrew is להתחרט to chisel,to engrave is לחרוט and they both share the same root.
A possible lesson in the connection could be that to regret truly is indeed a first step towards Teshuva,towards repentance.
However to truly effect the needed or desired change we have to engrave this regret on to our hearts and chisel it into every thought ,word and deed to serve as a reminder keeping us on the straight and narrow and facilitating true whole hearted repentance
